Press Releases For more information: Rosanne Desmone Mt. Vernon PR & Communications 703.799.8165 rdesmone@mtvernonpr.com Wrecking Corp.'s expertise in the challenges of downtown projects is a perfect fit for work on the cramped Carroll Square site ALEXANDRIA, VA, February 2, 2005 - Wrecking Corporation of America, selected as the demolition subcontractor for the Carroll Square project on F Street in downtown DC, began work on the site in January. The general contractor for the project is Clark Construction Group, headquartered in Maryland, and the developer is Washington-DC based Akridge Company. Wrecking Corp. is the subcontractor for the old DC convention center and handled the December implosion of that facility. According to Terry Anderson, EVP at Wrecking Corp., the Carroll Square project encompasses building demolition, select demolition, historic preservation and the excavation of 50,000 cubic yards of earth to make way for a commercial development project. "It's a multi-disciplined site in a very small area, involving nine contiguous buildings," Anderson said. "We have to take down four buildings, clean out and save four others, and retain the facades of two of the buildings, which date from at least the turn of the 20th century. "Like most of the downtown jobs we do," Anderson said, "the job is tricky because of the proximity of other buildings - in this case an historic church on the north and buildings immediately adjacent to the project. In addition, the excavation area has a small footprint (15,000 square feet) but requires a 55-feet deep hole, which will require a lot of synchronization with the footing and shoring contractors. The selective demo and razing also must be closely coordinated in order to maintain the historical fabric in usable condition." Wrecking Corporation of America took down its first downtown DC building 30 years ago. Headquartered in Alexandria, VA, Wrecking Corp. has worked on a number of high-profile projects downtown and in the surrounding metropolitan areas, including the George Washington Hospital and the Willard Hotel. Wrecking Corp. specializes in challenging projects on high-profile commercial projects and demolition on cramped urban sites as well as sprawling multi-building complexes.
