Building Demolition 51 Louisiana Avenue Washtington, DC [Click here to read the Construction cover story about this project] The demolition of a 6-level garage, building excavation, and site preparation for a new commercial building on Capitol Hill was complicated by a number of factors. First of all, the site abuts the occupied 51 Louisiana Ave. office building, and great care was required to mitigate impact to the existing building and its occupants. The site is surrounded by busy streets and a hotel on the north side, which required additional public safety measures and considerations about traffic disruption. WCA razed the six-story, 170,000 square-foot garage, which was constructed of reinforced concrete, and removed approximately 11,000 cubic yards of concrete and rebar from the site for processing and recycling. The company has begun excavation for a 10-story building and underground garage, and will truck approximately 80,000 cubic yards of dirt and other debris from the site to prepare for the new foundation work.
