Building Demolition Blackies House of Beef Washington, DC Please click here to read about the Blackies Memories Contest and see the winning entries. The demolition of the former Blackie’s Complex required a detailed work plan to bring to fruition. The complex was a group of old brick and wood row buildings that had been altered through the years to create the restaurant and night club as well as facilitate the construction of the Marriot Hotel above half of the site. The first stage of work was to hand-separate the structure for the surrounding buildings to remain, as well as identify and protect all Marriott utilities that had to remain. Next, half of the site was razed and cleared down to grade using a large excavator. Lastly, the area under the Marriott was selectively removed, leaving behind the columns and footings that supported the hotel above. Also included in a later phase is selective structural demolition and shoring of concrete girders and slabs to allow new construction. WCA’s client for this project was Centex Construction.
