Building Demolition

Liberty Crossing
1500 Tyson McLean Drive
Tysons Corner, McLean, Virginia

Wrecking Corp won a contract for the demolition of Liberty Crossing, the former home of the National Counterterrorism Center, a 256,000-square-foot, 10-story post-tensioned building in the busy Tysons Corner area of McLean, Virginia. Post-tensioning is a modern concrete reinforcement method using steel cables (tendons) that are tensioned after the concrete hardens. Very few Post-tensioned buildings have been razed because most were built during or after the 1970’s. These buildings offer a unique challenge to the demolition industry because 1) they have the tendency to want to collapse once some of the tendons are de-tensioned during the razing process; and 2) the steel cables are dangerous because of their rubber-band-like quality and the fact that they are hard to process for recycling.

The project also included excavation of 100,000 cubic yards of soil and backfill of 20,000cubic yards on site. The building owner was Peterson Companies, and the general contractor was Clark Construction Group of Bethesda, Maryland. The project was completed in six months.
