Building Demolition The Old Washington DC Convention Center Washtington, DC This was the largest single building, at 800,000 square feet, that has been razed in the Washington metropolitan area and the first to be felled by implosion in downtown DC since 1974. The two-level structure was constructed of heavy concrete, framing on the lower level and high bay steel trusses on the upper. The U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology took advantage of the implosion to conduct some research, placing 24 battery-operated transmitters inside the building prior to the event. The transmitters replicated emergency radio communications frequencies in an experiment that may one day help rescuers locate and communicate with emergency personnel and others trapped in collapsed buildings. Ninety percent of the building was recycled. All the ferrous and non-ferrous components (12,000 tons) were shipped offsite for processing, while all masonry and concrete (60,000 cubic yards) was crushed on site to create a sub base for a new parking lot.
